This fifth edition of Introduction to Electricity, Electronics, and Electromagnetics provides a broad range of subject matter in the electrical and electronic technology areas. In particular, the areas of electronic devices, circuits, and applications have been updated with the inclusion of the software packages PSpice® and Electronics Workbench™ (EWB). Numerous changes in pedagogy were made in response to suggestions by current users and reviewers. The number of chapters was increased to permit the introduction of practical examples, summaries, and greater detail in areas of particular importance. Increasing the number of chapters also served to reduce the overwhelming amount of material appearing in some of them. Particular examples were introduced to provide an immediate appreciation for the principles and devices introduced in each chapter. The examples center on electronic devices encountered daily in the home and industrial environment. Each chapter now has a summary section to review the salient points of each chapter and the important equations introduced. Finally, the problems were reorganized according to their level of difficulty.
The level of presentation is suitable for students who require a background in electrical and electronic components, circuits, and applications with less emphasis on derivations and advanced mathematical techniques. Approximations are applied as often as possible, with final equations and conclusions presented in their simplest form. The authors limited the presentation to the most important equations and concepts in each area rather than burden students with material that has almost no impact on their current needs. There is sufficient material for two semesters, although the text is most frequently employed in a one-semester course that covers topics of particular interest.
Because the scope of coverage is so broad, the authors would appreciate any input on material that should be added or deleted. It was obviously an immense challenge to provide a survey of the entire field in one publication. Acknowledgments
The authors wish to thank the following reviewers for reviewing the manuscript: Wayne Eisman, DeKalb Technical Institute; Dave Krispinsky, Rhode Island Technical Institute; Hossein Mousavine Zhad, Western Michigan University; and Alan Niemi, Lake Superior University.
We would also like to thank our Prentice Hall publisher Charles Stewart, and production editor Alex Wolf; Lisa Garboski, bookworks project coordinator; and our copyeditor Barbara Liguori, for their help with this edition. Robert Boylestad
