Getting this review out to those who are looking now before the Deluxe Edition is released for Sale and is currently in Pre Order Status. If you have never done the A+ before and if you have not studied Computer Engineering Technology or Computer Science or have taken Instructor led certification training, please wait for the Deluxe Edition. I have used the Deluxe Editions for Previous versions of A+, very helpful.This book delivers extremely concentrated content written on a college level with advanced terminology starting right away in the first few pages of the first chapter; and going forward throughout the book. Here is an example: in PCIE discussion star topology is referenced, without explanation of what a star topology is in reference to discussing bus architecture. The name Sandy Bridge is used when discussing chip sets and processors, without explaining what this Intel Code Name represents. This is not a complaint, just two examples as to why this is not a good book for those new to the subject matter covered in A+. This book disseminates information in a very concentrated and sophisticated manner. I am literally studying every paragraph thoroughly and learning and seeing a lot of new information. I really do like this book. It is good for instructor led training, experienced technicians, and those who have already had some formal training on the subject. I am still reading this, but I had to get this review out to help those who are currently looking at the 900 series in January before the other books have been released for sale.
This book is so thorough you will need a thermos of coffee to get through each chapter. Hang in there and it will prepare you for the A+ 901 and 902 exams. There are tests for each chapter and the answers with rationale are in Appendix A. I bought the paperback after endlessly scrolling through the eBook version my school had, and hard copy was much easier to use. One of my classmates has already taken the A+ and passed after four weeks of cramming these 20-some chapters. The pictures are black and white so some small details are hard to see. Search on "computer connectors" for a better look at those. Otherwise, great book with an excruciating amount of detail, bu that's what you need to pass. Get the current version; the test is expensive and you won't save money if you buy a cheaper older version that tells you all about Windows 95. Applause for the geeky authors who wrote this. I imagine they needed treatment for caffeine poisoning after they finished this valuable resource.
Good study book. This book and exam cram have both been good study books, but you only get 78 questions for 901 & 78 questions on 902 sections. Exam cram has better practice question/exam, software. Myers book although very in-depth, is long and packed full of "did I really need to know this stuff" info. Software questions/exam is virtually nonexistent, unless you want to pay a lot more (which I didn't).
This is one whole book with a hardcover, not two separate paperback books in a pack. Take advantage of the CompTIA voucher discount from the first page when you open it up. Take this book slow, and book your exam dates about 1.5 months in advance. Mike Myers lab manual might be a good back up resource for hands-on labs. The next exam for this series will be released in Spring of 2019 for the study book. So if you want to wait for Windows 10 topics and exercises I would advise to wait till then. For new comers to the industry, re-cert for CompTIA areas every 3 years after passing your first one. I would advise to get your certs all in that calendar year. Being outdated and out of the line of work will be hard for you to get back in as I myself am experiencing that lately. New comers to the economic field for first jobs start with entry level positions at your local school districts/govt/et, gain about 5 years of all around day to day experience/project cycles then move on to the public sector. Path to certifications for Desktop support would be recommended: IT fundamentals, A+, MTA-98-249, then the most current Desktop OS MCSA.
I am currently studying for 901 and 902. This book has lots of details but lacks organization. There is clearly a lack of tables. The author is a bit convoluted because he uses complicated sentences to describe topics. He does not provide clear and simple definitions for many terms. I have to use the internet to search for definitions. I have compared this book with Daril Gibson's book and the Microsoft Press book is much clearer in providing better diagrams and tables to summarize lots of facts. This book is up to date for the 901 and 902 but it could use better and clearer writing. I am currently creating an outline making up questions and answers from this book. I find it very slow and laborious to read the author's content. Sometimes, I can't find even a definition. If you do not know the material, you would find it a difficult and boring book to read. I consider this to be the best in terms of being the latest update and having the most information to prepare for test.d
Very good book, with extra background information. My only complaint is that the A+ certification test is geared towards hands-on practical questions. However, I believe that all of the A+ books on the market are behind the Certification tests - that is, I believe that all or most books on the market are focused on computer hardware and operating systems knowledge. But the CompTIA A+ tests have evolved to be more practical and "how-to" get things done.
The book itself is in good condition. Someone prior saw fit to circle questions they found difficult. Not a big deal.The voucher for exams was ripped out (not a big deal, since it is second hand after all), but not at all meticulously. I fear for the computers the previous owner will support.Most upsetting was the fact that the DVD which is apart of the book was not sent with the book. If it mentioned no DVD was included I would have just paid an extra couple bucks and got a new copy. Too bad.All in all, I think the book will be enough on its own to pass the exams, but I do enjoy the value adds.
